Save the ecology, recycle your carpet!

The flourishing carpet industry has paved the way for carpet recycling business in a big way. The lucrative business of carpet has an enormous impact on the ecology. However, environment conscious people are leaving no stone unturned in making the world safe for the Gen Y to live in.
Carpet, a highly engineered and complex product is made from nylon 6 or nylon 6,6, polyolefin, polyester, and wool, or of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene. Being a petroleum based product, has its own difficulties of disposal. With the recycling of carpets, one can reuse the discarded ones, thus, reducing the problem of diminishing landfills.
In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, Ms Kate Atkinson, Chief Executive of Carpet Recycling UK, told, “Each year near about 400,000 tons discarded carpets go to land fills in United Kingdom. There are quite many problems associated with the disposal of carpets. These are very heavy for householders to dispose of, and when in landfill they wrap around the wheels of machinery which makes it very dangerous for the driver.”
Talking about the problems of while recycling of carpets, Ms Atkinson stated, “It is difficult to identify what a carpet is made from without using special equipment: every post-consumer carpet has a slightly different mix of fibres.”
Further, expressing the need of promoting carpet recycling among common people, the Chief Executive stressed, “Although the carpet industry in UK is already supporting initiatives to promote the recycling of carpet to more recyclers and businesses, the UK Government should sponsor research to find high value end markets for the fibre streams that come from carpet.”
“The carpet waste can still be useful through the reuse of resources and slow deterioration of the environment can be stopped by raising awareness amongst householders and businesses. These are few ways to save the ecology which facing a grave danger and Carpet Recycling UK is our part in saving the nature.” said Ms Atkinson smilingly.
