The Vietnam Textile and Garment Industry’s development strategy execution conference was held on July 25, where Hoang Trung Hai, Deputy Prime Minister stressed on improving quality, increasing competitiveness of domestic enterprises and products and taking initiative in sourcing materials.

Industrial sources informed Fibre2fashion, that the Deputy Prime Minster took up specific issues including encouragement of scientific study, promoting product brand and fashion design, land and infrastructure policies among others.

The conference was held in light of the Government’s decision to target 16-18 percent annual growth in textile and garment production and 20 percent growth in exports over the next two years.

Accordingly, the textile industry is expected to achieve revenues of US $14.8 billion in 2010 and around $31 billion in 2020. It also targets exports of $12 billion in 2010, and $25 billion in 2020.

In order to achieve this goal, the Government is focusing on utilizing local raw material, seeking more investment, improving quality, expanding markets and intensifying human resource development, focusing on improving designs, applying advanced technologies, intensifying quality control, and overcoming export barriers.

Deputy Prime Minister also asserted that domestic demand for cotton fibre is large and stable and if Vietnam textile and garment industry can actively meet this requirement, it will be possible to improve the competitiveness of its products by value addition.

Cotton production is expected to rise to 20,000 tons in 2010 and 60,000 tons by 2020. The Government is also planning to set up textile and garment industrial parks and seek more local and foreign investment in various spheres like dyeing, weaving and production of cotton, synthetic fibers and other materials.

Exploring traditional markets like US, the European Union and Japan and finding other new ones was also considered as an imperative step in developing the overall industry. Besides, the Government also called for re-positioning of pollutant factories into concentrated industrial zones for better treatment of the hazardous chemicals.

Additionally, training courses in fashion design, fabric analysis and production and sales management will be provided for developing human resources.
